The summer of 2009 was a monumental summer for The Katie At The Bat Team which provided 160 weeks of summer camps for inner-city children.

One of our long-term participants was a huge behavior problem when she first came to The Katie At The Bat Team. Each day, the Katie director would have to spend time with her, working through bad language and attitude. This past summer, after more than a year in our Katie programs, she was awarded camper of the week. Her mother says, “I just don’t know where my daughter would be today without this program.”

  • This summer, The Katie Team partnered with Diversity Hoops at Haverford College. This wonderful program integrates classroom themes of sportsmanship and self-esteem into the playing experience.
  • Villanova University Women’s Basketball Team welcomed Katie Athletes back to their program for the third summer.
  • The tennis world opened up to so many Universal Institute Charter School students as well as new campers from Greater St. Matthews Baptist Church. Each day, camp director, Rose Weinstein and her dedicated tennis staff, welcomed Katie Athletes for tennis instruction at a beautiful park setting in Upper Merion.
  • For the final week of summer camp, The Katie At The Bat Team launched Camp Katie. It was a huge success! For one week, Katie staff led the girls in a range of experiences focusing primarily on character development and building bonds. Healthy meals were prepared, Chicken Soup Books were read, and self-exploration activities were guided by specialists. Campers also enjoyed tie-dying, swimming, and an occasional ice-cream.

Our ability to send children from their inner-city neighborhoods to beautiful, nurturing suburban camp environments has been expanding each summer thanks to the support we have been receiving from the extended community. We look forward to continuing to offer these wonderful opportunities in the summers ahead.
