Why athletics?
The Katie At The Bat Team seeks to address the myriad of problems facing urban youth. Inner-city girls, in particular, have extremely limited access to organized sports and the range of benefits associated with athletics. Girls who participate in organized sports are less likely to drop out of school, engage in illicit activities or become pregnant. A young person engaged in purposeful activity is more likely to become a productive young adult and less likely to engage in destructive behaviors. The Katie At The Bat Team provides access to healthy lifestyles and positive life choices for children who are slipping through the cracks of main-stream programs. Barriers to success for inner-city youth are numerous and complex: program components seek to break down these barriers and offer, long-term alternatives for building bright, productive futures for Katie Athletes. The Katie At The Bat Team offers sports programs to children who do not have access to planned athletic programs. Organized and instructional tennis, soccer, and basketball are foreign to participants at first. However, the students catch on quickly, benefiting from physical exercise, developing athletic skills, learning the value of teamwork and individual effort, and improving social skills.
